The first week of school is a time of new beginnings and excited faces. It can sometimes be hard to decide what to teach the students first – especially younger learners who have never encountered Mandarin before. I like to start with the basics. Where is China? I have a giant blow up globe where the students can follow the path from their home all the way to China.

Nexts comes the China Mystery Box. The China Mystery Box is filled with exciting and mysterious objects from China. Students can come to the front of the classroom and choose something from the China Mystery Box. This is a great way to get kids interested in learning Mandarin.

In closing, I usually like to give students something they can work on to reinforce what we learned. Check out my Introduction to Mandarin Activity Pack for some fun worksheets great for “print and go.”
