回到学校 Back-to-School Mandarin Activities

The first week of school is a time of new beginnings and excited faces. It can sometimes be hard to decide what to teach the students first – especially younger learners who have never encountered Mandarin before. I like to start with the basics. Where is China? I have a giant blow up globe where the students can follow the path from their home all the way to China.

Nexts comes the China Mystery Box. The China Mystery Box is filled with exciting and mysterious objects from China. Students can come to the front of the classroom and choose something from the China Mystery Box. This is a great way to get kids interested in learning Mandarin.

In closing, I usually like to give students something they can work on to reinforce what we learned. Check out my Introduction to Mandarin Activity Pack for some fun worksheets great for “print and go.”

Originally from Washington D.C., I moved to Hong Kong when I was 19 to work for a charity in the Philippines. After one year in Asia I had fallen in love with the Chinese language and culture. I lived in Greater China for another 6 years in places like Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. While in Asia, I worked in education, non-profit, and finance. I double majored in Economics and Chinese with a minor in Asia Studies at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. Most recently I received my masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Concordia University. I love creating fun and engaging Mandarin lessons for students especially in elementary.
